Active Soft Materials
Sensing Deformation and Contact Pressure

Wood developed a means to manufacture active soft materials that can operate even when they are deformed in shape. By incorporating a liquid metal to create conducting leads, he is able to make the devices sensitive to different types of deformation, including strain, pressure and curvature. These are essential building blocks for the active soft material structures that are being constructed.
