Crystals on Curved Surfaces

Polystyrene spheres (1 micron diameter) self-assemble into "continent"-shaped crystals on the surface of a water droplet. The sequence shows how one of these "worlds" melts. Studying the behavior of crystals on curved surfaces could help us control the structure of self-assembled materials.
