College and Career Awareness for Middle School Students
Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Graduate student Jordan Kennedy of Shmuel Rubinstein's group performs a demonstration on the effect of temperature on materials for students from the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing during a Project TEACH visit.

The MRSEC collaborates with the Harvard Public Schools Partnerships Team to give a science and engineering career talk and laboratory tour or demonstration during a college and career day for middle school students from Boston and Cambridge Public Schools. The program brings several hundred students per year to Harvard to learn about the excitement of a science or engineering career. In a recent visit, MRSEC faculty member, Shmuel Rubinstein, spoke to the students about his experiences in science and engineering while members of his research group gave students an unusual glimpse of everyday materials phenomena through interactive demonstrations of splashing liquids, crumpled paper, biofilms, and cracks in drying paint.
