Start-Up Company Formation
GnuBIO acquired by BioRad

Researchers at the Harvard MRSEC developed a method to sequence DNA using drop-based microfluidics pioneered in the Center. To exploit this development, a start-up company, GnuBio, was formed to commercialize this advance. Reflecting their success, GnuBio was recently acquired by BioRad, which will establish a larger Digital Biology Center in Cambridge (DBCC). GnuBio already employs over 87 people and additional staff will be added at DBCC to employ 150. Such thriving start-up companies provide exiting career paths for students and postdocs. They also create important, new high-tech jobs, improving our nation's economy based directly on NSF-supported research.
